Teaching Children Fire Safety Rules.

Anyone that is involved with the care of children, from babysitters to teachers to parents and grandparents should work together to teach kids of all ages about fire safety. There are some basic things that all kids and adults should know to make sure that everyone is safe and escapes in the event of a fire emergency.

To begin with every person entering or leaving a building should be briefed on the fire safety rules, if it is possible, designate 2 ways out of every room in the building. This could include not only doors, but windows as well. Make sure that the windows work properly, the screens can pop out easily and that if there are any added safety measures, such as safety bars, they can be opened quickly and easily.

Many homes have the bedrooms on the second floor,some even higher so there should be measures in place to ensure that the family can escape from the second story windows if the need should arise.

Escape ladders can and should be bought and placed near the windows where they can be easily accessed. There are some that are made of rope that can be stored in the home and dropped out of the open window. This will keep the home safe from intruders; no one will want to place a ladder on the outside of their home.

One exercise that you can do with children is to drop the rope ladder out of a first story window and let them climb out. This will help them to get a feel for the ladder so that they will know what to expect.

Everyone should be educated with regards fire safety rules as to what they should do if their clothing catches on fire. Teaching children to stop, drop and roll is important to their safety. Their first instinct will be to run so it is important to stress to them that for their safety and to avoid serious injury, they must stop, lie down on the floor, and roll around to put out any fire that may be on their clothing.

Teach kids the importance of staying outside once they have escaped from a burning building. Create a designated meeting place for the family to gather as they make their way out. Make sure that everyone, both the adults and children know that if anyone or any pets are not outside that they should tell a firefighter or police officer. Never try to return to the building.

You should also make sure that children know how to check to see if doors are hot. They should be taught to use a towel or blanket before handling anything that may be hot, such as door knobs. The towel can also be used to protect their faces while they make their way out.

As part of a fire safety plan for children, you should practice your escape plan at least 2 times a year. You should also consider fire drills to ensure that the children are learning what you are teaching them. How to stay safe in a fire could someday be one of the most important lessons that you teach your children.
